If you own land in Wyoming and are interested in installing a wind turbine, there are 3 criterion that are needed to be successful.
1) The land has to be very windy. Wyoming has an Anemomoter program that reduces the costs of conducting a year-long study to $4000. No one will consider building unless you have proven wind data. Look up Tom Fuller in The Wyoming Energy Department for availabilities of Anemometers. 2) Transmission access is the second most important criteria. You want to be within a half mile of a 115kv+ line. Wyoming wind maps should include transmission lines because they are so vital. 3) Third most important factor is electricity demand. Wyoming has the lowest average cost of electricity in the US. There is a very strong Coal Union presence as well as efficient/clean coal production. Currently the only way a company can make money on a turbine is to produce an amazing amount of Green Tags to sell to dirty power producers. On that note, Wyoming has a number of huge transmission projects (The Jim Bridger Project) and a Cheyenne-Denver project that will allow Wyoming much greater access to sell power to the regional power pool. The Jim Bridger project is a powerline that will stretch from Cheyenne to Utah and give access to the California power market (the most expensive market in the continental U.S.). These projects will take up to 10 years and will stymie the growth of wind generation until they are completed. |
