The “standard deviation” is a commonly used tool in statistical analysis. Essentially, the standard deviation is used to describe how spread out the data is. The first important point in a statistical analysis is the average (mean) wind speed taken from all of the measurements. The standard deviation is derived from a mathematical formula that takes the “deviation” of each measurement point from the average and the total number of measurements into consideration. Click here for a brief description of how the standard deviation is calculated.

The result is that the average value, plus or minus one standard deviation, accounts for 68% of the total data points. Furthermore, the average value plus or minus two or three standard deviations can be used to create ranges that account for 95% or 99% of the data points respectively. Therefore, in the context of wind speed measurements, the standard deviation would represent a range of wind speeds within which the wind speed at any given moment would fall 68% of the time.

Hopefully this answers your question.
