This is so wonderful, to have found this resource and forum! I have been researching what it would take to host wind turbines on our family's 160 acres in North Dakota, "the Saudi Arabia of wind energy." My brother isn't going to farm it.

Hi Laura,
Well, the first step is to determine if there is adequate wind across this land for a wind farm. The first pass at this determination can come from a state wind map, which can be found here at the Oklahoma Wind Power Initiative website: http://www.seic.okstate.edu/OWPI/WindRes/owrc.htm You will also need to learn more about the transmission lines on/around your property. This is equally important as your wind resource. Contact the utility company and ask them about the size and capacity of the lines. I think you have a great idea in considering a project wiht community participation. Read more about community wind here: http://www.windustry.org/community/default.htm Here are some links to contacts who may be able to help you evaluate your optoins throughout this process. http://www.windustry.org/resources/companies_developers.htm I hope this is helpful, and please let me know if you have other questions. |
