I am very impressed with this site and the people who post on this forum. My primary interest is in attracting potential leasees to my property in Kansas. Who exactly leases land? The power companies such as Kansas Power and Light, or Westar Energy? or is it private companies that sell to the public utilities? How do we contact these people?

Land for wind development can be leased by a variety of different people and groups.

In many cases, it is a wind developer such as FPL Energy or PPM Energy. In other cases, it can be a utility, or it can even be a business that represents both a developer and a utility. Small, community owned wind projects, such as those owned by municipal utilities, rural electric coops, or even schools or farmer groups also lease land sometimes.

I would caution you that it almost always works that the wind developer contacts landowners with property they are interested in, not the other way around. That said, I suppose it couldn't hurt to try! You can look at which companies have developments in your area already at this site.

You don't have to wait for a developer, however. There is lots of information and many examples of successful community owned wind projects on our web site. Putting together a project on your own is a lot more work, but the rewards are greater as well!
